What is Hypnotherapy??
Firstly before I go on to describe Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy for you it is worth remembering the following:- The client always has some control!! Ask yourself, if a therapist had all the control they could have every clients bank details and by now have a Rolls Royce! (I don't know of a hypnotherapist yet who has one of those)!
Hypnotherapy was approved as a form of treatment by the British Medical Association (BMA) in 1954 and by the American Medical Association in 1955. Doctors, Psychiatrists & other forms of 'Talking Therapies' sometimes use Hypnotic Technique. Even surgery & dentistry has taken place using hypnosis as the only anaesthesia. There is also a history of these types of techniques dating back over 2000 years.
Hypnosis is like 'active dreaming', You will be able to hear traffic outside, and the sounds of my voice will go with you while you are in my care. All your other senses will be acutely more active yet things just won't seem to bother you, as you concentrate on and focus on what's being spoken about. We all go in and out of 'trance states' every day, it feels like when "losing yourself" in a book, watching TV, or a movie or when driving a distance & not quite remembering how you got there. You are fully conscious, but you tune out most of the stimuli around you.
There is scientific evidence (use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanners & electroencephalographs(EEG's) which measure electrical & physiological brain activity, prove hypnotic trances stimulate some areas of the brain and that other areas quieten down. Hypnosis & Mental Conditioning and their therapeutic effects on mind and body are one of the most researched subjects within Universities and Medical Schools all around the world!.
In this special mental state, people feel less inhibited and extremely relaxed. this is because they tune out the worries about work, family, children, football team etc... let them fade away, until all you're thinking about is the beneficial suggestions of the therapist.
In Neuro science, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy etc. The mind is described as having 2 parts the conscious & sub/unconscious:-
The conscious is sometimes described as logical, adult in nature (it is estimated that the conscious mind develops in later childhood), a functional organiser of our thoughts, judgemental and intellectual. It tries to make sense of the world and filters all the other sensory inputs. The conscious mind is the main inhibitive component in your makeup -- it's in charge of putting on the brakes. A Watchdog ! A Sentry ! Size wise for comparison it's just the tip of the iceberg!
The sub/unconscious mind is the seat of imagination and impulse, is childlike, playful, highly emotional, remembers pretty much every experience we have (it is known to edit, misunderstand, change detail) is highly powerful and acts as the librarian of personal information and experiences, a bit like a learning machine!. It is also extremely creative, full of resources and stores our deep beliefs, remembers our fears, our feelings, and our thoughts! It is considered to be the largest part of the iceberg the part that supports and floats under the water!
During hypnosis your sub/unconscious mind is more in control, allowing access to the part of your mind that has developed/stored the reasons while you feel the way you do and for what you need help with. It also allows for the opportunity to make highly effective positive changes to you life using the wonderful gift of your imagination.
Allow your conscious to take a break, go on holiday for a while, have a rest and let go..
Whether or not hypnosis is actually a physiological phenomenon, millions of people do practice hypnotism regularly, and millions of subjects report that it has worked for them.
The most widespread example of this hypnotic behavioural modification is habit-control hypnotic treatment. In this application, a hypnotist focuses on one particular habit that is embedded in your sub/unconscious (smoking or overeating, for example). With the "control panel" to your mind open, the hypnotist may be able to reprogram your subconscious to change the behaviour.
Psychiatric hypnotherapy. In a therapy session, a psychiatrist may hypnotize his or her subject in order to work with deep, entrenched personal problems. The therapy may take the form of breaking negative patterns of behaviour, as with mass habit-control programs. This can be particularly effective in addressing phobias, unreasonable fears of particular objects or situations. Another form of psychiatric hypnotherapy involves bringing underlying psychiatric problems up to the conscious level. Accessing fears, memories and repressed emotions can help to clarify difficult issues and bring resolution to persistent problems.
Medical hypnotherapy. Doctors and spiritual leaders all over the world claim that hypnotic suggestion can ease pain and even cure illness in some patients. The underlying idea behind this, is that the mind and body are inextricably intertwined. When you suggest to the subconscious that the body does not feel pain, or that the body is free of disease, the subconscious may actually bring about the change. There is a great deal of anecdotal evidence to support this idea. Using only hypnotic suggestion as an anaesthetic, thousands of women have made it through childbirth with minimal pain and discomfort. Countless cancer patients swear by hypnosis, claiming that it helps to manage the pain of chemotherapy, and some former patients credit their recovery to hypnotherapy. Some of the areas hypnotherapy is used are:-
Stop Smoking Slimming Fear of Flying/Spiders/Pigeons Sleep Disorders Improving Sexual/Sports Performance/ Self Esteem/Confidence Stress Management Relationship Problems Emotional Problems
The success of hypnotherapy is undeniable!
